“I Wish I Had a River …” (pocket-sized post)

I have been meaning and meaning to post a recap about the brilliant Netflix show, The Politician. However, every time I sit down to start, I’m not sure where to begin. Mostly because I don’t know how to write a recap without giving too much away.

So what I will say is this: just watch it. If not for Ben Platt, then watch for Gwyneth; she’s brilliant in it. The show is an extremely easy binge because some episodes run a full 45 min to hour, but some are only 20 or so minutes long. If you were a Glee or Scream Queen fan, you’ll more than enjoy it,  Plus, the final episode sets the show up to have an amazing second season.

What are you doing here still reading this?? Go binge the show now!!!

How Friends Saved Me

“I’ll be there for you…”

This weekend, Netflix sadly gave me a notification during my Friends binge, letting me know I’ll no longer be able to be view the show anymore starting January 1st.

Image result for crying gif friends

I still have a few weeks left, yet I’m already having anxiety about its leaving, and not just because it has become one of my favorite shows. I started watching Friends on maternity leave with my first child. The struggle was real, ya’ll. While I love, adore, cherish, and am obsessed with my son, those first couple months were hard. Like, really hard. Like, more people should talk about how hard it truly is.  Yes, my TV days were out the window (Reality Check!!), but baby boy still slept quite a bit during the day, and I found myself needing something to watch, perhaps something I didn’t have to fully focus on as I do with Housewives (I focus hard on housewives; it is not just mindless television), I decided to start Friends. By start, yes, I’d never fully watched the show. I’m a millennial; the show was before my time (think more Gen X).

What. Was. I. Thinking?? WHY did I never start watching this sooner? Why did I always get upset when reruns aired, thinking to myself, “Ugh, nothing’s on.”

This was and is brilliant television!

Image result for friends gif happy

I’m not even sure I can put into words how the show eased my anxiety of first time motherhood fears, but thank heavens for it. I found smiles and laughter during a time when I was absolutely scared to death (seriously, I asked myself over & over how the hospital could let us leave with this small human; how could we now be the ones in charge?).

From Ross’s sad “Hi” …

to Chandler’s sarcastic comments …

to everything Phoebe did or said …

… I giggled, and giggled, and giggled some more! Often loudly! Never had a show made me laugh out loud more than Friends. Besides laughing, I now understand so many pop culture references I had heard, but never understood, like “SEVEN!” or “Smelly cat” or the Holiday Armadillo!

Image result for christmas armadillo gif

I guess my point is, besides the fact that I’m beyond angered I never started the show sooner, I’m so thankful for it. Thank you Phoebe, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Joey, and Monica, for coming into my life and calming my fears through laughter during a trying time. The show will forever be significant to me because it reminds me of the special time I got to spend with my boy, and the early weeks of his life, when I didn’t think I could make it. Now I know I can handle anything thrown at me … with a little help from some Friends (see what I did there!)

32 Thoughts From the 2019 Emmys

Two of my favorites: award shows & television!

  • Critic’s predictions (if you care…)
  • Red Carpet tiiiiime!
  • Okay, so I missed a majority of the Red Carpet due to a fussy baby, but here are my takeaways…
    • Fox’s interviews were so awkward (sorry Jenny & Kelly …)
    • Everyone looked incredibly uncomfortable due to the heat, especially the makeup jobs. Plus the entire carpet seemed super congested and packed.
    • However, my favorite looks included Sophie Turner, Emilia Clarke, RuPaul, and Annie Murphy!

Showtime!

  • Why didn’t we just start with Walter White? This is really great! I didn’t get the Homer Simpson or Anthony Anderson bit.
  • A Mrs. Maisel win! I bet we will be seeing many of those tonight 🎭
  • Told you (Best Supporting Actor & Actress)!
  • Fox pushing their shows haaaaard!! (No one wants a second season of The Masked Singer …)
  • WTF is on Nick Cannon’s head?
  • Omg this show is going to go on for.ev.er if they continue to do stupid bits before each award. I’m really not liking this on Fox.
  • Love Phoebe Wallet-Bridge’s dress!

  • What is Fleabag?
  • I was convinced I watched a majority of the shows nominated …. in this first hour, I am being proven wrong.
  • Yeeeeeah! I don’t watch Barry, but I loved Bill Hader on SNL!
  • Did you hear the screams for Catherine O’Hara?? Robbed!!

Image result for schitts creek catherine ohara

  • Kim tripped huh? And were people booing her & Kendall?? (Edit: apparently it was laughter)
  • GOT babiesssss …. and a retelling of Season 8 …. and the cast on stage!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  • Here come the categories I don’t know & don’t care about …
  • ZANDAYA!🔥🔥🔥
  • I thought Chernobyl was a documentary ….

Bedtime!

If you’re a follower of the blog or a friend in life, you probably know we had a baby in July (Oh [Baby] Boy! Reality Check!!!) & this was my first award show to watch with him. So, I didn’t get to view it all live (bedtime was about 9pm); baby boy & I will stay off Twitter, wake up early, & finish the show in the morning … obviously commenting on anything maje!

Monday morning …

and all my favorite categories: Drama!

Image result for drama drama drama gif

  • Beyond happy for Peter Dinklage; him as Tyrion Lannister this season was the best performance of the show!
  • Ughhh, still so many annoying bits too!
  • YASSSSS Julia Garner! Obviously I was rooting for a GOT win, but if you watch Ozark, (which you should be!), you’d know how amazing and convincing she is as Ruth.
  • Billy Porter, from Pose, won Best Actor Drama. I’m glad for him and his amazing hat on this historic win, however, Pose was the only show nominated in this category I don’t watch, thus I was basically rooting for anyone, but Billy Porter. Still though, congrats!
  • Jason Bateman won for directing an episode of Ozark; I guess if he can’t win Best Actor, this works for me!
  • Jodie Comer wins for Best Actress and once again Mandy Moore is robbed of an Emmy for playing one woman at every phase of life (but childhood, I guess, if you want to get specific🙄).
  • Did Schitts Creek really not win anything, after finally getting respect & being nominated?

Image result for schitts creek gif

  •  Game of Thrones wins for Best Drama! Duh.

My final thought is a quote shared during the show from Chairman & CEO of the Television Academy, Frank Scherma, who, no one knows or cares about …. BUT! what he said stuck with me deeply because I feel it totally explains my blog, love of television, & why I watch so much content … he said:

“When someone says ‘You’ve got to see this,’ what they’re saying is ‘I want to share this experience with you'”

and that could not be MORE TRUE! He also went on to talk about instead of saying “hi” as a greeting, we now ask “What are you watching?” Television, movies, pop culture, etc. brings us together, helps us find common ground, and can build bonds. Hence, my love for it💖

I’m Currently Watching …

img_3823

Week 6 of maternity leave is in full effect. I love my baby & our time together! Besides his eating and pooping a lot, the two of us spend our days doing what else?? Watching & discussing television. His current favorites include …

Big Brother

I always root for an underdog, so I am wanting either Nicole or Cliff to come away as the winner. I thought it was interesting that CBS aired Nicole reading her Head of Household letter; it’s as if they want her to win America’s Favorite Player, or the network just wants to show that it actually cast at least one genuine, good person?

Speaking of a not so genuine or good person, Michie is HOH currently. As I write this, I already know who won the POV and what that person plans to do with it. All I can say is I really hope this plan goes through; we’ll just have to see tonight!

Bachelor in Paradise

I can’t believe Caelynn left with Dean, I’m kind of digging Dylan & Hannah’s relationship, and please get Nicole & Clay off my screen. Other than that? Snooze fest.

This is the last week for paradise, right? Doesn’t DWTS start next week? Every year that I watch Paradise, I kind of feel like the final couple episodes are extremely boring, and I’m just not as into it. I’m ready for the reunion; that’s all I care about at this point.

Friends

img_3819

This is my first time sitting down to watch Friends from the beginning, in order. Usually I catch an episode here & there if nothing else is on. I know, I know, I know. How is that even possible? Everyone has seen and loves this show! It’s just one I never really got into before.

I decided to start watching it as a light- hearted, stress reliever during my baby’s newborn phase of late nights, cry fits, & my emotional overthinking of every little thing; come to find out, the show has helped so so much! I would literally prescribe it to anyone ever feeling anxious or sad. I’m so in love & invested after only three seasons that I purchased some of the PJs from the Friends line at Walmart. You can get yours at the link below 👇🏻 !!

Wal-Mart

Chandler is obviously my favorite, who’s yours?

Dave Chappell & Travis Scott

My husband and I recently watched Dave Chapelle’s Netflix stand up special. I cannot stress enough how not only hilarious, but accurate it is in today’s climate. However, Chapelle is definitely not PC in it. I would take this as a warning if you decide to watch, especially if you are one that is easily offended🙄.

I also started to watch the Travis Scott documentary, but I couldn’t finish it. Maybe I just don’t get him or his music? Honestly I just wanted to watch for the Kylie of it all. Instead, it seemed like mostly concert footage, and I wasn’t in the mood. It didn’t seem to tell much about his life or background or anything; maybe I gave up too soon?

Football Sundays

Go Chiefs!!!

I’m also watching Potomac, Orange County, & Dallas Housewives, AND Keeping Up, all of which are not disappointing, but rather are seeeeeerving up entertainment!

Weekly Television Roundup

Sit and wait, sit and wait. That’s about all I seem to do these days because it’s any time now that my baby boy could arrive (Oh [Baby] Boy!). However, I have TV to keep me company, so I thought I’d share my thoughts on everything I watched this week.

PS: If you don’t have a baby coming, and you watched all these shows this week simply for enjoyment, zero judgement from me … because baby or not, I’d be right there with you 🙂

Sunday: Real Housewives of Potomac

screenshot-2019-07-17-at-11.20.41-am.png

If you are a Housewife stan and you’re not watching Potomac, ummm what are you thinking? YOU ARE MISSING OUT! These ladies bring it each episode, but this week’s was beyoooooond as news broke that Ashley’s husband sexually assaulted a camera man. I feel bad for Ashley to have to watch this in current time since she just had a baby (last week I think?), and everything in her world should be celebrated right now, not shadowed by this scandal.

As for the other women, Gizelle  was and continues to be so so messy each episode. Even though she’s my favorite, when I think of the drama the ladies have with one another, it’s usually started or prompted by Gizelle. I’m really liking Monique this season. I love her commentary and insight on all the arguments the women have because a) being pregnant, she’s the sober, silent observer & b) she tends to see every side and will tell people when they are right or wrong (cough, Candiace, cough). Robin doesn’t really do anything for me on the show, Karen is old & terrible, and Candiance is the absolute WORST. She’s immature and unreasonable, plus she needs to mind her own business and keep her opinions to herself.

Monday: The Bachelorette

Image result for the bachelorette hannah and luke

It was Fantasy Suites this week for Alabama Hannah, and she had four guys to spend the night with instead of three. I was shocked, shocked I tell you, that Peter was the windmill date (“Know what? We did it a second time”), mainly just because he doesn’t really ooze sex appeal to me. However, he is my overall pick for Hannah; Peter is who I can picture her with the most.

I appreciated that Hannah felt she needed time with Tyler that didn’t revolve around intimacy, and that she didn’t want to have sex with him in the Fantasy Suite; physicality is not an issue for them. But, I don’t think it was necessary for her to make a big speech or a big deal about it at their dinner. Why couldn’t she just tell him that in the privacy of the Fantasy Suite? It was like she had to let America know she wasn’t planning on sleeping with him. Also …

Screenshot 2019-07-18 at 5.29.41 PM

Jed sucks. Girlfriend or not, he sucks. His temper tantrum about being compared to Luke was unnecessary.  Speaking of unnecessary, why he told Hannah he loved her when a) he came on the show with a girlfriend, b) his family seemed surprised he brought Hannah home (for more on this see Take Back Home, Girl: Bachelorette Edition) and c) it seemed like he was using Luke as a way to leave & get back to said girlfriend. Or maybe not. Regardless of it all, Jed sucks.

But, speaking of Luke, his date was NUTS, wasn’t it? It felt like we were watching someone have a true epiphany right before our eyes, as Hannah found the light and realized how horrible Luke was/is. Not only that, I think she finally saw how easily he can manipulate (or attempt to), but also backtrack, so the person he’s talking to is never really sure what he’s trying to say (#gaslighting). Spoilers for next week’s Men Tell All claim it will basically be the reckoning of  Luke, and if you still are not convinced he’s a terrible human being, go check out the Twitter he just got, and how he attacked Hannah on it. Image result for roll eye emoji

Tuesday: Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

Image result for real housewives of beverly hills reunion 2019

Do you like bon bons?”

So the first part of the Beverly Hills Reunion aired this week, and quite frankly, it was a bit all over the place. First, it started with a flashback to the Season 3 reunion, where Adrienne didn’t show up, and LVP gave her commentary on it, basically saying it was cowardly and wrong for Adrienne to not be there. HA! The hypocrisy of it all! While there was bit more on Vanderpump’s absence, the focus then shifted to Denise, her joining the show, and her life. I really like her, although I’d like to see her get a bit more feisty (which it looks like she might with Camille).

Speaking of Camille, she arrived to the reunion couch next. I think we’ll get more into the drama with her in the next two weeks (is it two or three parts?). The episode ended with the Lucy Lucy Apple Juice drama, and how Teddi got involved or was involved in it. Even though we’re all so sick of discussing this, I felt it was important to hear how Teddi was pulled in from the beginning. I had no idea it was because Dorit didn’t invite her to dinner after last year’s reunion (that was the reason right?). Regardless, Teddi’s feet were really held to the fire about how, yes, she was involved, and it was mainly Andy interrogating her. This will continue more next week I’m sure!

Wednesday: Southern Charm

Image result for southern charm colorado trip   Image result for southern charm colorado trip

Colorado, here they come! While I enjoyed watching this week’s Southern Charm, it was also a little boring at the same time. I mostly am just ready for the reunion because I want everyone held accountable for their actions this season, with footage to back it up. What am I talking about? Well I want Whitney to have to answer for hooking up with Kathryn and then blatantly denying it. I want Craig to have to answer for all his crazy outbursts. I want Austen to have to answer for cheating on Madison (did he actually have a threesome in that ridiculously repeated video?? “MADISON!!”) and where they currently stand today. Finally, I want Cameran to have to answer for all her motherhood comments. As for this week’s episode, it was fine, mostly just them traveling. I’m excited to see more of their actual trip!

Thursday: RHONY Reunion

Image result for real housewives of new york reunion season 11

I plan to recap the reunion in its entirety on a separate post, so you’ll just have to be a bit more patient on this one! However, part two did not disappoint!

In addition: Stranger Things & Younger

My husband and I finished binging the third season of Stranger Things this week. I won’t get too much into into because I don’t want to give away spoilers, but the ending absolutely wrecked me; I admit, I bawled my eyes out.

In my opinion, the season as a whole was the best yet. It was scarier, yet more intriguing, and the scenes between Steve, Robin, Dustin, and Erica were my favorite!

Image result for stranger things season 3

I’m also currently trying to get caught up on Younger. Anyone watch? I won’t dive too much into it either (so if you don’t watch you can skip this section), but currently I’m in the middle of season five. First off, Direct TV and TV Land need to figure their shiz out because I can’t pull up the episodes on Demand, so I have to watch on my leeetle phone screen (#firstworldproblems). Liza needs to figure some things out as well. While I was always rooting for her and Charles, now that he knows her secret, he’s being a little butthead about it, so I just want Liza to quit Emperical, marry Josh, give him the baby he wants, plus deserves, and just live her best life with him! Also, Hillary Duff is the true queen of this show and the main reason I watch!

Image result for younger season 5

Well I think that’s it!! Whew, we made it! See you all next week with a RHONY Reunion recap, a Queer Eye binge, and hopefully a baby!!

Thank you television, social media, and my husband for keeping me sane these last few weeks before Hollywood Hangover Baby arrives!

Need a New Show to Binge?

I know I don’t need a new show; my DVR is busting at the seams, plus Bravo just keeps bringing me more houswives. Because of that, I wanted to share a few of my favorite shows that are quite binge-worthy. So grab a pumpkin spice latte (it’s that time of the year, you know), put your feet up, and get ready to find an awesome new show you can start discussing with me!

Stranger Things

Stranger_Things_logo

If you haven’t heard of this show, I don’t mean to criticize, but have you been living under a rock? It was one of Netflix’s biggest hits last year and I actually binged it twice. This is important to note because I don’t even have time to watch all my normal shows, let alone watch a series twice. It’s. That. Good. Also it’s not something that I would typically be interested; it’s 100% sci-fi.

834c7de9e2463d2debdba2cc24aee84de22fef80

You’d like Stranger Things if you like:

  • The Goonies
  • E.T
  • Stephen King
  • Ghostbusters

My favorite character is Dustin   STRANGER-THINGS-dustin   because he has the best one-liners, is a good friend, and reminds me of many of my students. Last, the next season of Stranger Things comes to Netflix tomorrow (holla!) so if you start the show now, you won’t have to wait in agony (like the rest of us) for the next season!

Riverdale

nnn,mn

One of my very first posts (Not the Archie & Jughead I Knew Growing Up: Riverdale Recap) was about the show Riverdale: the CW hit that retells the beloved comic book series. Season two started a couple weeks ago and it’s soooo good! I’ve got a couple of my girlfriends to binge the show (trust me, it goes quick!) and even my favorite morning show hosts, Jackie & Claudia Oshry, started their own show about it: Afterdale.

You’d like Riverdale if you like:

  • Gossip Girl
  • The OC
  • Pretty Little Liars

My favorite character is Cheryl Blossom    5f63534fec5c01a908ac20cf41806340b1af31a6   because she’s cray-zie, yet fabulous and can also have a soft side when she wants. Like I said, the second season just started so you’re not too far behind if you wanted to get all the way caught up.

Game of Thrones

game-of-thrones

There is an entire category that holds all the posts I wrote about Season 7 of Game of Thrones (click in the top right hand corner now!). I don’t even know if I could write out reasons why you should be watching this show; just know it will go down as an absolute pop culture mega phenomenon.

You’d like Game of Thrones if you like:

  • violence
  • sex
  • attending your local Renaissance Festival
  • dragons
  • zombies
  • knowing what all your co-workers talk about around the water cooler on Monday mornings

My favorite character has changed from season to season due to the intense plotline, but currently it’s Tyrion Lannister, or Jon Snow, or Daenerys Targaryen. Ugh; I can’t decide.

download

Also if you’re a fan of Stassi Schroeder or Ansel Elgort, they’re huge fans too. Chances are your favorite celebrity is a fan, I mean Ed Sheeran was such a big fan, the show gave him a cameo last season!

Jane the Virgin

jane-the-virgin-season-2-netflix

I wanted to dedicate this entire post to Jane. I finally caught up on this season (it’s 4th) and wanted to blog before the third episode premiered tomorrow. Gina Rodriguez (who you definitely need to have a girl crush on) actually won a Golden Globe for her performance as Jane in 2015, which led me to start binging the show.

72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards - Season 72

The show is told Telenovela-style, so there are subtitles you’ll have to read, but it totally makes the show. I don’t even want to give away the premise of the show because it’s so funny and so ridiculous. My favorite season is probably the first and the current. There are a ton of cameos, including BRITNEY SPEARS, which if you read Justin Timberlake: Superbowl 51, you know how I feel about Ms. Spears.

My favorite character is Jane’s dad, Rogelio,
Image result for Rogelio de la Vega gif
because while he has the biggest heart, he’s extremely self-absorbed and it’s HILARIOUS!

Jane is a great character too, but that’s all because of Gina Rodriguez. She OWNS the role, but is also just an amazing role model in her real life. She’s not the skinny, blonde, ditzy stereotype of a female lead; she’s smart, feisty, and 100% real. I love her! Last, this show will not only keep you on the edge of your seat with some shockers, but will make you laugh out loud plus give you all the feels!

I Went on a Summer Binge ….

with my tv!

dkjdkjdfkjdkjdfkjldsfkjdfskjladskl

I realize summer isn’t officially over until September 22 (according to a calendar), but since I’m officially back to school next week & have been setting up my classroom the past two weeks, summer is over for me. With that, I wanted to share the shows I binge-watched on my summer vacation, especially if you’re someone in search of something new to start before all the fall shows return!

dsdfsfsfsdfdsI had been dying to watch this show since I read the book by Liane Moriarty back in 2015. However, my husband & I are cheap and didn’t get HBO until just this month (for obs Game of Thrones reasons).  I think I may really struggle discussing this show because I don’t even have words for how amazing it is …

speeechless.png

The premise is that a murder takes place at a elementary fundraising event and you spend the entire series (and book) trying to figure out who died and who the killer is. The story revolves around three main women: Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shaliene Woodley), and Madeline (Reese Witherspoon). There are minor characters as well including the three women’s husbands, overbearing Renata (Laura Dean), and hippie Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz).

kkkkk

Big Little LiesHere is what I said on Goodreads about the book when I read it: “What a quick read! This book was insanely entertaining, many times humorous, and part tragic. I kept thinking, ‘Which character am I most like?’ Plus, for someone who can usually foresee endings, I was shocked here with the murder and the Saxon Banks reveal!”

This may be the first ever novel to film adaptation I’ve seen that barely changes the plot of the novel, plus perfectly casts each character (okay maybe The Outsiders is first but BLL is obviously second!). The series is completely taken over by Kidman, Woodley, & Witherspoon, not just because you may be cheering for their characters, but because they become the characters and you’re completely sucked into their world.

The series is only seven episodes, about 50 or so minutes long, so it’s quick to binge, plus it was nominated for eight Primetime Emmys! Last, the soundtrack to this show is UNBELIEVABLE! For some reason, Witherspoon’s first grade daughter (in the show) has amazing taste in music and the music really directs the storyline. If you have HBO, go watch Big Little Lies NOW! If you’ve watched it, let’s dissect.

RiverdaleI’ve already covered this show on the blog (you can read it here!). However, two of my favorite podcasters @girlwithnojob & @JackieOProblems just watched and loved this series, plus I got one of my besties to binge (and love) it, thus making me want to include it on this list.
the crownI feel like I’ve been watching this show forever and I’m so glad I finally finished it! The Crown follows the current Queen of England starting with her father passing and then her starting her reign as queen (that’s Elizabeth II). This show won the Golden Globe for Best Television Drama in 2017, Claire Joy (who plays Elizabeth) won the Golden Globe for Best Actress TV Drama, and the show has an 8.8 rating on IMDb (which, if you follow that site, you know is amazing). The show is also nominated for 8 Primetime Emmys.

dfdhkjfsf

When I first started watching, I felt the show was extremely slow; usually I want to binge a show (like the two above) that surprises me each episode, keeps me coming back for more because there is unfinished business in the plot, or I need to know “who done it.” The Crown is not this. But, I’m fascinated with history and while watching, you learn so much. For example, did you know Winston Churchill hated a famous painting commissioned of himself around his 80th birthday, apparently leading his wife to burn it? Or, who knows about Elizabeth’s sister, Princess Margaret’s whirlwind romance with Peter Townsend and all of the drama it caused the sisters?

fjdfdjklsf

Who knows exactly what is for sure true in the scripted series as the show alludes to marital problems between Elizabeth and Philip, Winston Churchill covering up a stroke (on top of being unpleasant), and Prime Minister Eden’s drug problem.

My favorite thing about the show though, is the feeling you get when watching, like I immediately want to be taken to England 1954 after I finish an episode. I’ve always been fascinated by the Royal Family (my husband still recalls when we were dating & I set an alarm in the middle of the night to see Kate & William wed) and this show has deepened that interest. It’s more than just the family; it’s the setting and scenes of the show. This show is shot beautifully! It’s no wonder because according to IMDb, the “series is Netflix’s second most expensive project.”

djfskfjdkslf.jpg

Vanity Fair wrote a great article on The Crown and it’s transition into Season 2 if you’re interested in reading more on it. I look forward to not taking as long to finish Season 2 when it’s finally out on Netflix!

dddddddsdf

If you’ve watched any of these three shows and have thoughts or opinions, hit me up on social media or leave a comment on this page! If you have any other binge-worthy suggestions, please share those as well!
