The Bachelor Winter Games: Week 1

“If there is anyplace to help me fall in love, it’s the Winter Games…”

and I can only agree! I had more smiles watching four hours of the Winter Games, than all of Arie’s season. I’m too lazy to go into the premise of the Bach WG, and I feel like if you’re here reading this post, you probably already know what the show is about. Click here for the who, what, when, where, & why of the show; I only have time for my thoughts.

Initial reactions …

I guess it wouldn’t be a Paradise spin-off if Ashley I. wasn’t caught crying, but you’d be so shocked to hear her story at the end of the week (spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched … wait, why are you even reading this if you haven’t watched?!).

I’m not sure if it’s Olympic hype or the the boredom I feel for the current season the The Bachelor, but I am SO pleasantly surprised that I was not in pain watching the first two episodes of Bach Winter Games! There are just SO many things I liked about the show.

While the whole “opening ceremony” was stupid, I loved meeting the cast (cast? contestants? singles? players? WHAT DO YOU CALL THEM?!) from other Bachelor franchises, especially from other countries! I immediately loved the Canadians: Kevin (swoon) and Benoit (more on him in a minute). While I thought it was a little weird bringing someone in who spoke zero English (Japan), I knew Yuki would bring something special, if not entertaining, to the mix!

Since I only became part of Bachelor Nation during Jojo’s season I got to see a few familiar American faces including Luke, Dean, & Eric. But it was fun to meet people from past seasons I didn’t watch including Lesley and Clare.

I also really enjoyed the different competitions during the show, especially because most of the Americans are from L.A. and have no idea what they are doing in or on the snow. I just feel like sometimes these Bachelor shows do nothing but talk about feelings, talk about feelings, or kiss, kiss, kiss (ahem, Arie’s season right now zzzzzzz…) so it was fun to see the cast (cast? contestants? singles? players?) do something different and compete against each other (and not just for one person’s attention).

Speaking of something different, I LOVED how at the first rose ceremony, you weren’t guaranteed a rose if you were in a relationship; you got voted off by the opposite sex because “maybe you weren’t here for the right reasons!” It was BEYOND entertaining to then see them all scramble and to hear the conversations being had. While I was happy to see this aspect of the show, I was totes sad to see Eric “WE OUT HERE” Bigger go home.

Finally you guys, I am SO here for all the couples that formed in the first week of the show. Even Ashley I. seemed to find a true connection after she took Bibiana’s sloppy seconds. Can we talk Bibi for a second? First she lands Kevin, one of the hottest guys there. Then decides to give him to Ashley because Ashley is hysterically crying in the corner, only to have Bibi tame the New Zealand bad boy Jordan.

If you thought she was crazy or loud or anything negative in Arie’s season, girl redeemed herself (even though she didn’t need to) on the Winter Games and is KILLING IT!

I’m also really liking Dean and Lesley (Deanie Baby, please don’t break her heart!), Josiah and Ally (redemption for Josiah this season!) & surprisingly Clare and Benoit/Christian (spoiler: I can’t hate on Clare because something major is going to go down next week or on the reunion special, even though I REALLY want to hate on her for breaking sweet Benoit’s heart!)

Again, I am SO here for these couples. Like, I am wanting a Raven/Adam love I can follow on social media for Jordiana, Desley, EVEN Ashlin!! (If I didn’t ship their names correctly, someone please let me know asap!)

I am obsessed with this show and am PUMPED for next week. I had planned to cover all four episodes (sad it’s only four episodes) in one post, but once I got started my love could not be contained, so lucky you, I’ll be back at the end of the week to share my thoughts on the remainder of the show.

Find me on social media and let’s discuss your thoughts … are you too loving this season? If so, what couples do you like? And if you aren’t liking the show, to that I must say …

… couldn’t help myself!)

See you next week! Xoxo!

Movie of the Week: Dunkirk

My view count of nominated movies now sits at 2/9!

Go me! I realized the other day I have a little bit of time seeing as the Academy Awards don’t air until March 4th. The hubs and I have seen Get Out and now Dunkirk, with Lady Bird and Twelve Billboards being the next on our “to watch” list.  But for this week, we traveled back to World War II to see if Harry Styles really could act or not.

Okay chill, that was a joke; of course he can act; Harry Styles can do anything. More important than Harry is the plot of the film and it’s retelling of the rescue of over 300,000 Allied troops from Dunkirk to England in 1940. Now class, please refer to the map below to understand the significance of this rescue.

Image result for dunkirk

As you can see, the bad guy or the Enemy as called in the film, surround the troops who were literally in lines waiting for their rescue, either from the Navy or Air Force. Yet, not much help was coming. This is one (OF THE MANY) thing I hate about war depictions in film … the sitting and waiting of troops with the enemies lurking close by. I completely understand this was real life and is why the film was made in the first place, but there goes my gel manicure every. single. time.

Related image

It took me a while to figure out there were three story lines going on simultaneously, yet at different intervals of time. I think that’s how I would explain it, right? There is the story line of all the troops waiting on shore and their story is told over a week’s time during the film.

Then there is the story line of the cutest dad and son (& random other kid who sadly dies — didn’t really get the point of him being in the film … unless he was a real person, in which RIP) traveling through treacherous, war filled sea, to help rescue the men on shore. This boat they take to save the soldiers is a straight up … oh I don’t know … vacation boat? Tourist boat? Definitely not a war boat!

Image result for dunkirk

Their story lasts only an hour in time over the course of the film.

Finally, there are the men in the air, one being the legend known as Tom Hardy. From what I could understand, there are three pilots, two get shot down, the little vacation boat I mentioned above picks up one of the pilots, and Tom Hardy lands on the shore of Dunkirk…? (Fact checkers or intense movie fans, feel free to correct me here). The pilots’ story is only an hour in time over the course of the film.

I’ve read and heard from others who have seen the movie, that the lack of dialogue contributed to a low rating of the film. In my opinion, that is precisely the point of the plot.

Image result for that's my opinion gif

As I said, these men were literally trapped, with the enemy closing in. I really don’t think they are going to sit down and have a long discussion about the state of the world; they’re just trying to survive it. Plus, nothing can go right. The troops on shore (especially the three men being followed for the plot) try two or three attempts to get off the shore, only to have something bad happen. Once, they literally are in the water only to float back to shore. The dad and son experience a tragedy while going to the Dunkirk shore, but keep going anyway. Finally, the three men in the air? The story ends with only one. Plus, the shore, boat, & air plot lines eventually all come to intersect, which to me was so so so fascinating, so sorry fans that wanted a ton of dialogue to strengthen the film. #8.1onIMDB

If you’re interest in this film is not yet peaked, I’m sure these two words will do it: Harry Styles.

I kept trying to think of how I would describe Harry’s acting chops or how I felt about him in the film. I still am not able to put it into words. The best I could come up with are that a) I have never loved him more (& I never really loved him in the first place) and b) if you didn’t know that was HS, you would have appreciated him just the same. With the latter I mean, he did nothing to stand out as Harry Styles, which I think is important because then you buy into him as a soldier and you don’t see Harry Styles each time he’s in a scene. You just experience the film.

“When I was growing up in the house, we’d watch the Oscars.” — Billy Crystal

Me too, Mr. Crystal. I believe Dunkirk is a perfect film to be nominated for an Oscar. Do I think it will win? No. Was I disappointed that I watched? Not in the least!

Super Bowl Half Time Show — I Can’t Take It Anymore

My name is Katy and I am a Justin Timberlake fan.

0052

Going strong 20 years now, and honestly, I don’t care whether you are or not. I wasn’t going to comment on his Halftime Show from last night’s Super Bowl but then I thought of two things. One, this is my blog and my outlet to share MY opinions and what I LOVE, and if you know me, you know the love I have for JT is unconditional & never ending. Two, I’m tired of seeing all the hate on social media he got for the performance, so I’m here to defend defend defend!

Image result for justin timberlake superbowl halftime

Before we get into the actual performance, let’s just realize we live in a world right now where no one can do right (which I totally get is the pot calling the kettle black because majority of my blog is me complaining about actors or making fun of reality stars, but whatever I’m getting cheese fries). Timberlake got hate as soon as it was announced he was performing, especially from Janet Jackson fans, but come onnnnnnnnnnnnnn! I take a firm stance that his 2004 SB performance with her (#nipplegate) was completely planned and if you think for a second that it was a “wardrobe malfunction” then …

Image result for kristen taekman you're delusional

UGH and the #JanetJacksonAppreciateDay trending on Twitter?? Again I say, come onnnnnnnnn! Anyway, people were going to go in on him from the beginning no matter what, so he had quite a bit to prove.

IMG_0119

Not everyone was rooting against him though. Lady Gaga (who is a QUEEN) tweeted out support for him before the performance, wishing him luck, as did Jimmy Fallon. So let’s get into the actual performance and see why he succeeded when so many said he failed.

First, the audio. People were saying it was fuzzy; I didn’t hear fuzz, but I’m sure if people instead heard total clarity, they’d have then said he sang poorly live. Second, the Prince tribute. People were saying it was inappropriate and more; yet if he hadn’t done one, people would have been upset. Last, singing Rock Your Body (aka the #nipplegate song); it’s one of his biggest dance hits, and to those people saying he smirked right at the “Janet Line” you’re reaching so far your arms HAVE TO be tired! Seriously, watch the footage.

I have seen Justin Timberlake in concert and let me tell you, last night’s show was IT. That was a straight thirteen minute Justin Timberlake concert. Just like at one of his shows, he’s dancing and singing, and straight PERFORMING his heart out,  fusing songs together, singing all your favorites, plus moving all over the arena! He did the same thing last night. From starting underneath the stadium, then waltzing down onto the field to the main stage, then having a center stage where he could perform from any side of it, to straight dancing on the field, to performing with a marching band (which we’ll get to in a minute) to straight dancing into the crowd! Sheesh, I’m just tired describing it all! But at an actual Timberlake concert, it’s two hours of all that (and no one is rooting for him to fail).

I promise I’m almost done ranting, but I want to discuss my favorite part of the whole show (and it wasn’t changing one middle schooler’s life by taking a selfie with him, but props for JT for doing it!) THAT! MARCHING! BAND! during Suit & Tie! Did anyone catch the football reference?

Image result for marching band super bowl 52 halftime show

Get it? Halftime of a football game and a marching band is performing? Also, raise your hand if you knew that was the actual University of Minnesota marching band? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Image result for marching band super bowl 52 halftime show

Well, if you’ve made it this far through the post, maybe I’ve started to convince you that his performance was outstanding and deserves credit, not criticism. If not, maybe these famous voices can help sway you because JT SLAYED AND KILLED SUPER BOWL LII!
